Life is Funny.

11-4-17

Every weekend I make an effort to plan at least one exciting thing for me and my boyfriend to go do. He is incredibly busy during the week with homework, tests, and applying to P.H.D programs. I occupy my time with running social media accounts and art. Opposites definitely attract in our case… We tend to get bored easily and there are times when we feel like we have explored all there is to see in our city of Raleigh, North Carolina. There are plenty of times when we want to quit and just say, “when we move next summer we will try new things in our new city.”

This is not going to work for me.

I make an effort every day to try and live in the moment otherwise, I would drive myself crazy thinking about all the exciting things we have planned for the future.

Today was a gorgeous, misty, cloudy day. The trees were flashing bright colors as we drove towards downtown to do something we have never done before, visit the museum of modern art. We have been to every other museum in the area but this particular one has evaded us for quite some time. We got dressed up, Hayden just had a fresh haircut in the morning and I had on my new tinted lipgloss from Pixie on my lips.

We found a great parking spot and walked up to the intimidating building, wondering if we were cultured (hipster) enough to be socially accepted. After talking to the woman standing in the front lobby about tickets we found out the sad news. There was an event at the museum that day so it was not open to the public. They were incredibly nice about it but we still left feeling disappointed and a bit heartbroken.

On our walk to the museum, I had noticed a few little shops that we have never seen before so naturally, we decided to give them a try. We had to turn this day around. I always say that cloudy days make the best days so this needed to remain accurate.

We popped into the first little shop, it was a mini art gallery and store!

After perusing the art installations, the merchandise from local artists caught our eyes. There were handmade pillows and cross-stitched fabric mixed in with some watercolor

It is much more fun to find them naturally rather than order whatever I want online. One pin design I have been particularly looking for has been an amethyst crystal. This little art shop in downtown Raleigh just happened to have exactly what I was looking for.

I might be a little overdramatic, but it really felt like a magical moment. Hayden said the magic words, “it’s yours!” and we went to the cashier (who was strumming his guitar while we shopped to add to the ambiance). Since there was no cash register the purchases needed to be recorded manually so I slipped away to go to the bathroom. When I returned, Hayden and the guy were exchanging phone numbers. It turns out they have the same online computer science class that is quite challenging. So not only did I find my dream pin, Hayden got a study partner!

At this point, I was on a high. It didn’t matter that the museum was unable to let us in (we got free tickets for next time anyway!) I was having the best day. We decided to pop into the next store and it was drop-dead gorgeous.  There were flowers everywhere and anything from handmade gardening supplies to candles and wallets. All from local artists and very aesthetically pleasing. We weren’t planning on buying anything this time but it was still fun to look.

The front of the shop was very small but we took a peek around the corner to unveil a gorgeous studio space. I decided to strike up a conversation with the girl in the front to ask what the space was used for. It turns out, local artists can rent a desk there to work

on anything they want! It is a way for them to get out of the house and have a creative home to call their own. I believe the shop is known for doing floral arrangements but this addition was quite unique. It made me realize that this is a possible future for me!

I have difficulty feeling inspired in my apartment so someday I dream of having a little desk at one of these local workshops. I discovered a dream I never even knew I had. All thanks to an event at the museum.

Funny how that works.

Only one part of our plan worked out today. We stopped by the local juice store, Raleigh Raw, to try one of their unique blends. The bottles were huge so we decided to split a Coal World that contained all sorts of healthy stuff like activated charcoal (whatever that is). FullSizeRender (3)

It was just one of those days. Sometimes it can feel stressful to deviate from the original plan which I know very well having anxiety.

Yet, today was special.

I will always remember this day full of surprises, inspiration, and love. It is days like today that make me realize just how much I love life and the man I share it with.

  1. You are the most amazing young person that I know. But of course I’m not just noe realizing this. I knew it from the first time I met you. I cannot tell you how grateful I am to have met you and watch you grow from an adolescent to womanhood. I continue to wish you all the best in your life and future adventures. You truly inspire me.
